What exactly is cocopeat, and how is it different from coir fiber?

Both come from the same coconut husk. When husk is decorticated, the long strands are coir fiber — used for rope, mattress padding and export bales. The soft, spongy pith left behind is cocopeat, which is cured and packed as a growing medium.

Is your cocopeat safe for salt-sensitive plants?

Fresh cocopeat is naturally high in soluble salts. Ours is stacked, turned and cured for 6–12 months specifically to bring that down before packing — but exact EC varies by batch, so ask us for the current reference sheet if you're growing something salt-sensitive.

How do I use cocopeat for home gardening?

If you have a compressed block, soak it in water until it breaks apart and expands — one 5kg block typically yields around 15–18 litres of loose cocopeat. Mix it roughly 40–60% with your garden soil or compost for containers and raised beds; it holds moisture well and keeps the mix from compacting.

Can cocopeat be used in hydroponics?

Home Gardening

Using cocopeat in home gardens & balcony pots

Cocopeat is one of the easiest ways to improve a home potting mix. If you're starting from a compressed block, soak it in a bucket of water — it will expand to several times its dry volume as it breaks apart into loose, fluffy peat. A standard 5kg block typically yields around 15–18 litres once fully hydrated.

For containers and raised beds, mix it roughly 40–60% with your regular garden soil or compost. The cocopeat helps the mix hold water for longer between waterings, keeps the soil from compacting around roots, and is naturally pH-neutral, so it won't fight with whatever you're growing. It's especially useful for balcony and terrace gardens where pots dry out quickly in the sun.

One thing to watch for: cocopeat holds nutrients loosely, so container plants growing in a cocopeat-heavy mix usually need a bit more regular feeding than plants in straight garden soil.

Hydroponics

Cocopeat as a hydroponic growing medium

Cocopeat is a popular choice in hydroponics because it strikes a good balance between two things a root zone needs at the same time: water retention and air porosity. Unlike soil, it doesn't compact, so roots keep access to oxygen even when the medium is holding a lot of moisture.

It's used loose in grow bags, pressed into slabs for channel systems, or blended with perlite where growers want faster drainage. Because it's inert, nutrients come almost entirely from whatever feed solution you're running — which gives growers precise control, but also means EC and pH of the cocopeat itself matter before you even add nutrients.

For hydroponic use specifically, ask for a batch with a confirmed low EC reading — this is one setup where residual salts in the medium can throw off an otherwise well-tuned nutrient schedule.

Nursery & Seed Starting

Why nurseries prefer cocopeat for germination

Seed starting is one area where the difference between fresh and properly cured cocopeat really shows. Well-cured cocopeat gives seedlings a light, well-aerated medium to push roots through, which tends to produce a more even, fibrous root system than compacted soil.

It also holds enough moisture that germination trays don't dry out between waterings, without staying so wet that seedlings are prone to damping-off. Because it's lightweight, root balls come out of trays and pots cleanly at transplant time with far less root disturbance than a heavier soil mix.

Mushroom Cultivation

High-EC cocopeat as a substrate ingredient

Mushroom cultivation is one of the few uses where growers specifically ask for cocopeat with a higher EC, rather than the low-EC grade used for sensitive nursery crops. Here, cocopeat is valued mainly for its structure and exceptional water-holding capacity, which is used as part of a substrate blend to keep humidity steady around the mycelium.

Moisture consistency is the detail that matters most in this application — batches that swing wet-to-dry make it harder to hold the humidity a mushroom bed needs, which is why growers buying for this use tend to stay loyal to one supplier once they find a consistent batch.

We are a coir-processing unit that turns raw coconut husk — a byproduct otherwise left to waste — into two commercially valuable materials: coir fiber and cocopeat.

Husk is procured from local coconut markets and mechanically decorticated to separate long coir fiber from the softer pith. The fiber is baled for export, primarily to China, where it's used in mattresses, geotextiles, and rope manufacturing. The pith is where most of our attention goes: it's stacked, watered and turned over a 6-month to 1-year composting cycle to bring down its natural salt content before packing.

We packed and shipped more than 7,500 tons within 6 months of finished cocopeat to customers across India — nurseries, hydroponic growers, landscaping contractors, and agri-input retailers.

C. Ramesh Reddy — Founder

Sattva Agro is led by C. Ramesh Reddy, who brings more than 30 years of experience in manufacturing and over 35 years of hands-on knowledge of coir and cocopeat processing.

His background is in precision manufacturing — he founded MR Treads, an MRF-authorised tyre retreading company that grew into one of the most respected retread manufacturers in India. That grounding in process discipline, quality control and running a lean, efficient industrial operation carried directly into his next venture.

In 2020, he turned his attention to cocopeat — applying decades of manufacturing rigor to an agricultural byproduct most businesses treated as waste. Under his leadership, Sattva Agro has scaled into a unit shipping thousands of tons of cocopeat and export-grade coir fiber every year, built on the same fundamentals that built MR Treads: consistency, discipline, and getting the basics right, batch after batch.

Husk Procurement

Coconut husk is bought directly from local coconut markets and aggregators near our unit, keeping the supply chain short and the raw material fresh.

Husk is fed through defibering machines that mechanically separate long coir fibre from the softer cocopeat pith — the split point for our two product lines.

Why the Long Cure Matters

Cocopeat is only as good as its curing time.

Fresh cocopeat pith is naturally high in soluble salts and phenolic compounds that can hold back root growth. There's no shortcut around that — only time, turning and washing bring it down to a level that's safe for sensitive crops.
